FANSHAWE WOMEN’S SOCCER
Vaughan, ON. OCAA Champioship October 29,30, 2010

Fanshawe’s hopes of a second straight OCAA title came crashing to earth Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Humber — the Falcons’
first defeat of the season — in the gold-medal game at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
After absorbing some Humber pressure for about the first 35 minutes, the Falcons fell behind 2-0 at the half on two quick goals.
Fanshawe starting netminder Sarah King was injured in the goalmouth scramble on the first goal. She was replaced by
Kayla Sibbald, who surrendered the second goal. King returned in the second half and was beaten by a long-range shot
before exiting the game again with a leg injury.
“We were the underdog going in, but credit to Humber. They played a very good game and they’re very experienced,”
Fanshawe head coach
Martin Painter said. “It just wasn’t our day. We played much better in the second half and
Victoria Morelly hit the inside of the post. If that goes in, who knows how the game would have turned out,
but their experience blew our team away.”
Semi-Final game Fanshawe and Algonquin, battled to a scoreless draw through 45 minutes. Algonquin used the opening kickoff of
the second half to give Algonquin the 1-0 advantage.
Three minutes later, the Falcons pulled even at 1-1 when Victoria Morelly parked at the penalty spot, hit a
ball directly at Thunder netminder Jennifer Kelly (Ottawa),
who saved the first attempt, but Morelly buried the rebound for the Falcons.
In the 80th minute Meaghen Orr (London, Ont.) picked the ball up about 45 yards out and dribbled diagonally through
three defenders to pull up just outside the 18-yard box on the right side, where she hit a ball through the hands of
Kelly to make it
2-1 Falconssending Fanshawe to its second straight OCAA title game.
FANSHAWE CLINCH PLAYOFF BYES

The 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s soccer regular season came to an end Thursday. But there is
plenty more soccer to follow as a dozen teams battle over the next two weeks for a spot at the 2010 OCAA soccer soccer
championships Oct. 29 and 30 in Vaughan, Ont.
Fanshawe College (6-0-2, 2nd place West
The defending OCAA champion gave first place Humber its only blemish of the season with a 1-1 draw on Sept. 17. But a surprising 0-0 draw against St. Clair College in Fanshawe’s second-to-last game of the season prevented the Falcons from claiming a share of first place in the West.
Defensively, Fanshawe has shut out its opponents six times this season. Offensively, seven Falcons have scored two or more goals, including Jessica Bergsma’s (London, Ont.) team-leading four.
Fanshawe receives a bye and awaits a game with either Durham or La Cite Collegiale next weekend.
Fanshawe will Play Durham as they won 4-1 over Le Cite`.

Youthful Falcons continue their winning ways
September 16, 2010
There were plenty of new faces in the Fanshawe Falcons’ lineup Wednesday, but last season’s Ontario colleges men’s
soccer bronze medallists got their season off on a familiar note — a victory.
Having only four returning players didn’t seem to faze the Falcons as they swept to a 4-0 home win over the Lambton Lions.
Coach Mario D’Oria, who took the reins Wednesday as head coach, explains, it’s going to be a challenge, but my prediction is
we’ll finish on top of our (West) division,” he said. “We had about 120 out at tryouts and we got quite a bit of talent from there.”
