FC LONDON PLAYOFFS vs Chicago Fire

Tuesday 7:00 EST in Chicago
By STEVE GREEN London Free Press.
SOCCER: Winner advances to Central Conference final four. Eight days after being burned 3-0 by the Chicago Fire, FC London returns to the Windy City looking to exact some timely revenge. The teams meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Lakes Division semifinal, with the winner advancing to this weekend's USL Premier Development League's Central Conference final four in Pontiac, Mich. A London win would go a long way toward easing the sting of a week earlier as well as a 1-0 Fire win in the same semifinal game in 2009. "The guys are very excited," head coach Martin Painter said Monday. "Even though we lost to Chicago the last time, we're still confident. I think we'll play well enough to get a result. It's going to come down to execution at both ends of the pitch." FC London ended its regular season with a 1-1 tie Sunday in Ottawa against the Fury, with the majority of London's top players sitting it out. "I think we have an advantage this time in that a lot of guys were able to get some rest," Painter said. "And the last time, we were coming off a pretty demoralizing loss to Michigan a couple of days earlier. Read More »

Hemming satisfied with situation!

By STEVE GREEN London Free Press - July 21, 2011
Tyler Hemming's pro soccer career has come full circle and while some might view that as a regression, he's not one of them. The 26-year-old Saunders secondary school grad is finishing up his first season with FC London of the USL Premier Development League, where he played with the Ottawa Fury in 2005 and 2006 while attending Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. In between, he played seven games in the 2007 and 2008 MLS seasons with Toronto FC and also had stints with the Charleston Battery of the USL Division I, Montreal Impact of the North American Soccer League and the Austin (Texas) Aztex of the USSF Division 2. He also earned two national team caps for games against Cyprus and Jamaica. But he opted to finish up his sports management degree at Western -- he left Hartwick a semester early after being drafted by Toronto FC -- and that made joining FC London in a player-coach role an easy choice.
FC London 5, Lynx 1
London goals: Scott Bibby (12th minute), Haris Cekic (36th), Jovan Ivanovic (55th), Jonattan Cordoba (69th, 75th)
Toronto goal: Randy Ribeiro (82nd)
Next: London ends its regular season Sunday in Ottawa with a noon game with the Fury. London then heads to Chicago for the Great Lakes Division semifinal Tuesday against the Fire. Read More »

Ceric magic maddening to Fury!

By Morris Dalla Costa The London Free Press
FC London have smoothed out what was a rough Premier Development League road. London defeated Ottawa Fury 3-1 Thursday at Cove Road Field in an entertaining match. The Blues have earned 10 points out of a possible 12 in its last four games. Their play of late is a relief to a club that has rarely struggled in its first three years in the USL. They didn’t struggle Thursday. “That was the best half we’ve played in three years in the league,” coach Martin Painter said. “We certainly deserved to be up by more than one goal. But we played great.” Midway through this season, the big question before every game is which FC London team would show up, the good one or the not-so-good one. FC London went into the game hoping to extent its run of good play. It’s a big change from last month when they lost three games in succession, all at home. London needed to take advantage of its games in hand. Going into Thursday’s game FC London were in third place, well behind the Michigan Bucks who lead the Great Lakes Division, but London has played three fewer games. Chicago Fire is in second place having played one more than the Blues. Numbers forced the Ottawa Fury to play in the Northeast Division where they are 3-5-2. Read More »

Monday's 1-1 draw with River City in Kentucky!

Carl Haworth steps into scoring role for FC London, netting five goals over two games before being shutout on Monday

By Morris Dalla Costa The London Free Press
He's the little man for whom size means nothing. The most important thing for FC London and Carl Haworth is that Haworth is big where it counts, putting soccer balls into the net. The Blues needed someone to step up and put the ball in the net on a regular basis. Haworth took the challenge and now he almost can't stop scoring. OK, he didn't score in Monday's 1-1 draw with River City in Kentucky, but he's found the net five times in the two previous games, including a hat trick against Hamilton Rage that saw him pound in the winner in the last minutes of the game. He has eight goals this season and it is becoming a regular occurrence to see the strikingly blonde head as the focus of a goal-scoring celebration. Read More »

A 3-2 Win Over Hamilton Rage places FCLondon in third place!

Haworth Hat Trick celebrates CANADA DAY for FC LONDON

By Fc London website
With a last minute goal by Carl Haworth, FC LONDON sealed the deal against Hamilton FC Rage on Friday night to celebrate CANADA DAY and launches the team into 3rd place in the Great Lakes Division of PDL with 2 games in hand. London started strong on a Free kick attempt by Ogilvy barely saved by Hamiltion Keeper and solid corner by Dino Ceric again just saved past the post. At the 16 minute mark, a well placed pass by Christian Castillo put Carl Haworth in the clear and he took it to the net and put it past the Hamilton keeper. Only moments later, a Hamiltion Free kick by DeZorzi was deflected off a FC LONDON defender to tie the game. Taking control of the offensive area, Carl Hawroth continued to be on fire with a second goal at the 25 minute. Gary Ogilby, Castillo and Tyler hemming both had close opportunites on free kicks as FC LONDON continued to press to the end of the half. The great crowd of 700+ at Cove Rd was well rewarded in the second half with ongoing pressure from FC LONDON, although Hamiltion tied it up 13minutes into the second half on a corner kick. The celebration of both Canada Day and a FC LONDON win, came at 90th minute mark when Haworth got his hat trick and sealed it for FC LONDON on a strong run through the Hamiltion defence, placing the ball in the back of the net to the roars of the crowd. "We had the run of play, and had 2 goals called back, so its nice be rewarded for all that hard work with a win", says Martin Painter, Head Coach for FC LONDON. "At the half way point and 15 points on the board, we are still in good shape to make a playoff run". FC LONDON play 2 back to back games next week on Thursday night against Ottawa Fury (a game rescheduled from the Home Opener), and then again on Friday night against the Akron Summit Assault. Both games are at Cove Rd and start at 7:30. Tickets are available at the gate before the game or at "Source for Sports" on Wharncliffe. Fans attending the Thursday game, will get a $2 discount on their Friday admission with the presentation of a ticket stub.

FC can't match Hamilton's Rage!

By MORIS DALLA COSTA, THE LONDON FREE PRESS
There would be no last-minute reprieve for FC London this time around. Earlier this season, it took two late goals for London to defeat the Rage 2-1. This time it was Hamilton that responded to the challenge. Friday night at Cove Road, FC London looked to do the same thing but the Rage hung on for a 2-1 win in USL PDL play. Scott McCoubrey fired a 22-yarder past FC keeper Jarrett Humphreys in the 60th minute of the second half to give Hamilton the win. Later in the half Humphreys made a penalty save against Evan James. FC London seeks to rebound!

By MORIS DALLA COSTA, THE LONDON FREE PRESS
FC London is in unfamiliar territory. The USL Premier Development League team has lost two home games in succession, something that's rarely happened in its three years of existence. Its second loss, a 4-0 thumping at the boots of Indiana Invaders, was the worse loss in London's existence. As a result, FC London now finds itself in the middle of the Great Lakes Division table, a spot they've rarely occupied this far into the season. Even though London has played as few as two and as many as five games less than everyone else in the division, that won't matter much if the Blues don't play better. Read More »

FC London first loss of season to Michigan Bucks!

By MORRIS DALLA COSTA, The London Free Press
Sat Jun 11/2011
FC London was sent a message from the Michigan Bucks. You may be good enough to win the Great Lakes division title but you have to get through us to do it. The Bucks came to Cove Road on Friday and defeated FC London 2-1 in a USL Premier Development League game in front of about 800 fans. It was far from the greatest game in terms of entertainment. But FC London had its share of the play. The Bucks though came up big when they had to, a testament to their perennial status as a Great Lakes division powerhouse. Read More »

By MORRIS DALLA COSTA, The London Free Press
Jun 06, 2011

FC LONDON looked impressive in their 2011 Season Home Opener against the River City Rovers from Louisville, Kentucky. With goals from Scott Bibby, Christian Castillo, Carl Haworth, Jonattan Codoba and a 30 yard cracker from local Londoner and FC LONDON Captain Haris Cekic, Read more »

Two more key players to return to FC LONDON!

logo FC London is excited to announce that two other former FC London strikers will be returning to don FC London jerseys this season. Michael Pereira is another returning player this season after leading Providence College to the final of the Big East Championship. Pereira is also a member of the U23 National team and recently attended a camp where he got the chance to play against LA Galaxy of the MLS. The midfielder has a great tactical awareness and understanding of the game and Painter describes the 22 year old as a player who offers great qualities that are vital to FC London's success.
logo Another key player to FC London's successful 2010 campaign will be returning this summer. Rio Grande sophomore Scott Bibby will suit up once again for FC after a great season with the Red Storm. Bibby built on his strong first year at Rio Grande with 15 goals and 6 assists in 21 games. The forward has no reservations about re-joining FC London this 2011 PDL season. "I feel very good about coming back to London this season. I left on a good note so hopefully I'll be able to pick up where I left off," said Bibby. "It should be really easy to have another great season because the coaching staff at FC London is top quality," he added. FC London would like to welcome back veteran FC strikers Michael Pereira and Scott Bibby!

Healthy Ivanovich looks beyond FC London

By Morris Dalla Costa The London Free Press

One of the major goals of FC London was to give local players a chance to play and keep them at home. Four local players have committed to return to FC London for a third season. Jovan Ivanovich, Haris Cekic, Michael Pereira and Todd Rutledge will all play for the USL's Premier Development League team. All four have played major roles for FC London in the past. A key for FC London is the return of Ivanovich. The big, central defender was a major contributor to FC London but had injury problems last year. He was attempting to return from a nagging turf toe injury so he opted to spend most of his time playing for AEK London of the Western Ontario Soccer League last summer Read more »
